Black-Bean & Walnut Soup for Winter (Water)

55 minutes 🍵 2 bowls Jin Yang

In five-element practice, black foods nourish the Water element and the kidneys — the body’s store of deep energy. This soup leans into that idea for cold months.

This is food, not medicine.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup black beans, soaked overnight
  • 1/4 cup walnuts
  • 3 slices ginger
  • 5 cups water
  • Pinch of sea salt

Method

  1. Simmer black beans and ginger 45 minutes until tender.
  2. Add walnuts in the last 10 minutes.
  3. Mash a few beans against the pot for body; salt to taste.
  4. Serve hot, especially on cold evenings.

When to reach for it

Traditional practice pairs this with Water-time signals: cold hands and feet, low-back ache, or fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix in winter. A warming meal — not a treatment.
