Metal Element

Metal Element & Autumn: Lung Care for Clear, Easy Breathing

By Jin Yang · July 10, 2026

Metal is the element of autumn — clarity, structure and letting go. In five-element theory it is linked with the lungs and the large intestine, and with the emotion of grief. Metal types are precise, principled and a little reserved; they value order and clean lines.

This is a cultural wellness perspective, not medical advice. Wheezing, persistent cough or breathlessness needs a clinician.

The Metal type at a glance

Metal people tend to be:

  • Precise and principled — they like standards, fairness and clean systems.
  • Reserved but deep — slow to open, loyal once they do.
  • Sensitive to loss — grief is Metal’s signature emotion.

When Metal is balanced, these traits become integrity and quiet strength. When autumn “dryness” gets in, the same energy shows up as a dry cough, dry skin, constipation and a low, held-in sadness.

Quick self-check: is autumn “dryness” affecting you?

SignYou?
Dry cough or tickly throat in autumn
Dry skin, lips or nose
Constipation or hard stools
Low mood you can’t name
Craves moisture / warm drinks
Sighs or feels “compressed”

A dry throat in heating season is common. Several together is a cue to add moisture.

Autumn habits for Metal balance

  1. Add moisture. Soups, stews and steamed pear are traditional autumn foods.
  2. Breathe on purpose. Slow belly breathing supports the lungs and settles grief.
  3. Let go. Metal’s lesson is release — declutter, finish loose ends, grieve cleanly.
  4. Cover the neck. Classical advice says wind at the nape invites illness; a scarf is cheap medicine.

Recipe: pear & snow-fungus soup (Metal style)

A beloved autumn dessert-soup in Chinese homes — white, moist and gently sweet.

Ingredients

  • 1 dried snow fungus ( Tremella ), soaked and torn
  • 2 pears, cored and cubed
  • 6 dried red dates (pitted)
  • 5 cups water
  • A few goji berries

Method

  1. Simmer snow fungus in water 40 minutes until gelatinous.
  2. Add pears and dates; simmer 20 more minutes.
  3. Stir in goji berries off heat.
  4. Serve warm. Keeps in the fridge 2–3 days.

A moist, soothing food ritual for dry seasons — not a treatment.

The lungs and “letting go”

In five-element theory the lungs govern not just breath but the intake of fresh energy and the release of what’s stale — physically and emotionally. Autumn is the natural season to practice both.
